President to Chair Special Meeting on Prison Situation Today

Minister of Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs Ananda Wijepala says President Anura Kumara Dissanayake will chair a special meeting this evening (07) to discuss the prevailing situation in the country’s prisons.

Speaking in Parliament today, the Minister said the Government is taking immediate steps to bring the situation under control while ensuring the safety of both inmates and prison officers.

He stressed that the recent incidents do not pose a threat to national security and noted that both short-term and long-term measures have already been proposed to address issues within the prison system.

Wijepala further revealed that the Cabinet has appointed a committee, chaired by the Minister of Justice, to oversee reforms and recommend solutions to the challenges facing the prison sector.

He added that today’s high-level meeting, convened by President Dissanayake with the participation of relevant stakeholders, is expected to result in the implementation of urgent measures to restore stability and strengthen prison management.
