Former UNP Parliamentarian and ex-Deputy Leader Ravi Karunanayake has raised serious concerns over what he describes as the Central Bank’s interference in government affairs beyond its independent mandate.
Speaking at a media briefing, he urged professionals to speak out against such actions, noting that similar conduct is not seen in other countries.
Karunanayake stated that, under normal circumstances, a Central Bank is expected to provide necessary advice and carry out its functions independently and discreetly.
However, he alleged that the institution is now making direct statements on government matters, which he said is incompatible with the principles of Central Bank independence.
