Former United National Party (UNP) Deputy Leader and Member of Parliament Ravi Karunanayake says the government’s recent fuel price reduction is insufficient and has called for the removal of the QR code-based fuel distribution system.
Speaking to the media, Karunanayake said fuel prices should be adjusted in line with movements in the global oil market.
He argued that while authorities have been quick to increase domestic fuel prices when international oil prices rise, they should also make corresponding reductions when global prices decline.
The MP further pointed out that previous government explanations—that fuel prices could not be reduced because existing stocks had been purchased at higher prices—appeared inconsistent with the recent decision to lower prices.
Karunanayake also said that with reports indicating an easing of tensions related to the Iran crisis and improved stability in the global oil market, the government should consider discontinuing the QR code-based fuel distribution system.
He maintained that both further reductions in fuel prices and the removal of the QR system should be considered if market conditions continue to improve.
