Ravi criticises vehicle import policy, urges shift to electric vehicles

March 28, 2026

Former UNP Deputy Leader MP Ravi Karunanayake has stated that the consequences of the government’s decision to import double cabs instead of prioritising electric vehicles will become evident in the future.

Speaking to the media, he said that although he is in the opposition, the proposals put forward at this time must be practical and forward-looking.

He stressed that the government should have adopted a long-term vision from the outset to better navigate ongoing and future crises. Karunanayake also noted that he had previously proposed reducing the country’s recurrent expenditure as part of such an approach.

Recalling earlier discussions, he said that when the government planned to import double cabs, he had suggested prioritising electric vehicles to prepare for a potential fuel crisis.

He added that adopting electric vehicles could have helped the country save a significant amount of money spent monthly on fuel.
