Former United National Party Deputy Leader and Parliamentarian Ravi Karunanayake says political parties must work together if they hope to win the confidence of the people.
Speaking at a media briefing in response to a question about the recent merger of several Tamil political parties, Karunanayake said the move reflected the importance of political unity.
He noted that the parties involved had stated they were coming together to achieve their own political objectives.
However, he said it remains unclear how the newly united parties intend to position themselves politically or whether they will function as part of the opposition.
Karunanayake stressed that the broader objective should be to build a strong and effective opposition capable of contributing to the country’s democratic process.
