Former Deputy Leader of the United National Party (UNP) and Member of Parliament Ravi Karunanayake said education is fundamental to laying the foundation for taking the country in a new direction.
Speaking in an interview with ceylonwire.lk, Karunanayake commented on the education reforms proposed by the current government, expressing concern over what he described as the slow pace of implementation.
He said that many of the measures currently shaping Sri Lanka’s education sector were initiated during Ranil Wickremesinghe’s tenure in government under the UNP.
Karunanayake also noted that although the current Prime Minister has taken steps to introduce education reforms, progress has remained slow.
He further highlighted the impact of the country’s brain drain on the university system and stressed the need to address the issue.
The MP also expressed concern that many students leave school after completing their Advanced Level examinations and enter low-skilled employment instead of pursuing higher education. He said this trend raises concerns about the country’s future and highlights the need for stronger opportunities for young people to continue their education.
