Ravi Karunanayake: ‘Governance Realities Differ from Opposition Promises’

April 20, 2026

Former Deputy Leader of the United National Party, MP Ravi Karunanayake, says that implementing promises made while in opposition becomes far more challenging once a party assumes power.

Speaking to the media, Karunanayake noted that the current government is also experiencing this reality.

He added, however, that a government still has the ability to take meaningful action while in office, and pointed out that opposition groups—including himself—have highlighted such issues on several occasions.

Karunanayake emphasised that an efficient and capable Ministry of Finance Sri Lanka is essential for the country’s proper functioning.

He further cautioned that relying solely on circulars, rather than appointing competent and qualified officials, could lead to ineffective governance and poor outcomes.
