Ravi Karunanayake Questions Government Over Provincial Council Elections

July 25, 2026

Former United National Party Deputy Leader and Parliamentarian Ravi Karunanayake has called on the Government to clarify its plans regarding the long-delayed Provincial Council elections.

Speaking to the media, Karunanayake said he had sought clarification from the Government on whether the elections would be held and whether sufficient funds had been allocated for the process in this year’s national budget.

He stressed that if the Government intends to proceed with the elections, it should announce a clear timetable and the proposed dates without further delay.

Karunanayake also noted that several Tamil and Muslim political parties have been advocating for the Provincial Council elections to be held, adding that Sinhala and other political parties are also expected to seek clarity on the election schedule.

He said the Government should provide a clear position on the matter to ensure transparency and uphold the democratic process.
