Former United National Party Deputy Leader and Parliamentarian Ravi Karunanayake says that although inflation is reported to be under control, the cost of living continues to rise, leaving many Sri Lankans without meaningful relief.
Speaking to the media, Karunanayake said the Central Bank has focused on highlighting lower inflation figures instead of addressing the day-to-day financial challenges faced by the public.
He argued that while economic indicators may show improvements, what matters most to ordinary citizens is whether the cost of essential goods and services becomes more affordable.
Karunanayake also questioned why the reported decline in inflation has not translated into a lower cost of living, despite the Central Bank’s claims that inflation has remained under control for several consecutive quarters.
He said the public is less concerned with technical economic explanations than with their ability to manage household expenses using their monthly income.
Karunanayake further called on the Central Bank to provide clearer answers to public concerns, arguing that greater transparency and accountability are necessary to justify the institution’s independence.
