Former United National Party Deputy Leader and Parliamentarian Ravi Karunanayake says Sri Lanka must adopt a global perspective if it is to overcome its economic challenges, stressing that the country is part of the international economy.
Speaking to the media, Karunanayake questioned whether the country’s economic difficulties should be attributed solely to the Government or to global developments, while also calling on the Central Bank to account for its role as an independent institution responsible for financial stability.
He said he continues to raise these concerns on behalf of the people and stressed the importance of ensuring accountability in economic policymaking.
Karunanayake also highlighted the economic policies implemented during the UNP-led administration between 2015 and 2018, claiming that the Government at the time reduced fuel prices, introduced interest-free loan schemes for university students, expanded insurance coverage against natural disasters, eased the cost of living and attracted investment to support economic growth.
He said Sri Lanka should focus on strengthening its position in the global economy, particularly during a period of economic recovery.
“The world is not inside Sri Lanka; Sri Lanka is inside the world,” Karunanayake said, emphasizing that the country’s future depends on effectively engaging with the international community.
