Former UNP Deputy Leader MP Ravi Karunanayake has questioned the Finance Minister in Parliament regarding Sri Lanka’s regulatory stance and oversight gaps in relation to cryptocurrency and digital asset transactions.
He drew attention to the ongoing investigation into a Rs. 290 million cryptocurrency scam, highlighting the seriousness of the issue.
The MP also referred to an observation made by the Colombo Chief Magistrate, who noted that funds are being siphoned out of the country through loopholes in the existing legal framework.
Karunanayake further recalled that when he previously raised this matter on January 23, 2025, the Central Bank Governor had described cryptocurrency transactions as “neither legal nor illegal,” underscoring the lack of clear regulatory direction.
