Former UNP Deputy Leader and MP Ravi Karunanayake has called for renewed efforts to combat the rapid spread of dengue, recalling a mosquito control programme implemented with Australian support during his time in government.
Speaking to the media, Karunanayake said that in 2019, while serving as Minister of Power, a team of Australian experts worked with the Colombo Municipal Council to carry out a dengue control programme.
He claimed that no similar initiative is currently being implemented despite the growing health risks posed by the disease.
Karunanayake said the Australian team used a specialised pesticide to eliminate dengue mosquito larvae and suggested that authorities consider reintroducing the same approach.
He added that the Colombo Municipal Council has prior experience with the programme and is well placed to take the lead in implementing similar dengue control measures.
