Ravi says Central Bank must prioritise people, not just banks

March 27, 2026

Former UNP Deputy Leader MP Ravi Karunanayake has stated that the country does not need a Central Bank that focuses solely on protecting the banking system.

Speaking to the media, he stressed that at a time of national crisis, the institution must take decisions that also consider the welfare of the people.

He noted that while safeguarding investors is important, equal attention should be given to protecting the public, calling for a more balanced approach in policymaking.

Karunanayake emphasized that the Central Bank should act in the interests of the people, particularly during difficult economic conditions.

He further argued that the country’s bankruptcy was the result of issues within the Central Bank rather than actions of the public, and added that the media too should question and scrutinise the institution’s conduct.
