Ravi says Sri Lanka’s fuel price hike among highest amid Middle East crisis

March 28, 2026

Former UNP Deputy Leader MP Ravi Karunanayake has stated that Sri Lanka has recorded one of the highest fuel price increases, in percentage terms, compared to other countries affected by the ongoing Middle East crisis.

Speaking to the media, he noted that local fuel prices have risen by around 30 percent, adding that this increase appears significantly higher when compared with global trends.

Karunanayake also pointed out that international oil prices continue to fluctuate almost daily due to tensions linked to the Iran conflict, warning that further increases cannot be ruled out.

He stressed that, despite global pressures, it remains the responsibility of the government to protect the public. Highlighting the social impact, he said that around 15 percent of the population is at severe risk due to rising fuel costs, and emphasized the need to prioritise support for this vulnerable group.
