Former UNP Deputy Leader and MP Ravi Karunanayake has called on the government to immediately reduce local fuel prices, saying the recent decline in global oil prices should be reflected in Sri Lanka.
Speaking to the media, Karunanayake said fuel pricing in Sri Lanka should not be determined solely by developments surrounding the Strait of Hormuz.
He noted that international oil prices have fallen significantly following the peace agreement between the United States and Iran and argued that the benefits of this decline should be passed on to the public without delay.
Karunanayake also pointed out that previous governments had faced similar challenges arising from international crises, adding that such situations are likely to continue in the future.
He said that while the crisis had pushed fuel prices sharply higher, the price of a barrel of crude oil has now fallen to around US$80–85, and stressed that Sri Lankan consumers should receive the corresponding relief.
