Sri Lankan javelin thrower Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage has won the gold medal in the men’s javelin throw at the 2026 Asian Games in Japan.
Pathirage took the lead with a throw of 88.33 metres on his third attempt at the Nagoya City Mizuho Park Athletic Stadium and maintained his position throughout the event.
He improved his distance to 88.55 metres on his final attempt to secure the gold medal.
India’s Yashvir Singh won the silver medal with a throw of 84.72 metres, while compatriot Rohit Yadav claimed the bronze with a distance of 84.35 metres.
Sri Lanka’s Sumedha Ranasinghe finished sixth with a throw of 78.08 metres.
Pathirage’s victory marks Sri Lanka’s first gold medal at the 2026 Asian Games.
Sri Lanka has also secured a silver medal in the women’s cricket event at the Games.
