The Supreme Court of Sri Lanka has ruled that former Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police (SDIG) in charge of the Western Province, Deshabandu Tennakoon, and former Officer-in-Charge (OIC) of the Colombo North Special Investigation Unit, Nalin Sriyantha, violated the fundamental rights of a social activist through his arrest and detention during the 2022 Aragalaya protest period.
The judgment was delivered after the Supreme Court considered a Fundamental Rights (FR) petition filed by social activist Anuruddha Bandara.
