Showers Expected in Several Areas; Rough Seas Forecast

Showers or thundershowers will occur at times in the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces, as well as the Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Galle and Matara districts, today (12), according to the Department of Meteorology.

Several spells of showers are also expected in the North Western Province, while showers or thundershowers may occur at a few places in the Uva Province and in the Batticaloa, Ampara and Mullaitivu districts after 2.00 p.m.

The public has been advised to take adequate precautions against temporary strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

Meanwhile, showers may occur in several sea areas extending from Chilaw to Matara via Colombo and Galle.

Southwesterly winds of 30–40 km/h are expected, with wind speeds increasing up to 50 km/h at times in sea areas from Matara to Pottuvil via Hambantota and from Chilaw to Kankesanthurai via Mannar and Puttalam.

The sea areas from Matara to Pottuvil via Hambantota and from Chilaw to Kankesanthurai via Mannar and Puttalam are expected to be rough at times.

Naval and fishing communities engaged in activities in these areas have been urged to remain vigilant.

The Department further warned that wave heights could increase to around 2.5–3.0 metres in sea areas extending from Colombo to Pottuvil via Galle and Hambantota.
