Former United National Party Deputy Leader and Parliamentarian Ravi Karunanayake says there are growing signs that Sri Lanka’s major opposition parties are moving towards greater unity.
Speaking to the media, Karunanayake said those who question the role and effectiveness of the opposition should also consider the political realities created by the Government’s two-thirds parliamentary majority.
He noted that the same electorate that granted the Government its overwhelming mandate is now questioning why the opposition has not been more vocal, adding that an opposition with limited parliamentary strength can only do so much beyond raising its voice on national issues.
Karunanayake, however, said it appears that the parties representing the opposition are increasingly coming together to strengthen their collective role.
He reiterated that a united front between the United National Party (UNP) and the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) is essential and expressed confidence that the country’s major opposition parties are moving towards closer cooperation.
