Sri Lanka Customs has seized a large consignment of illegally imported foreign cigarettes hidden in a warehouse within the Colombo Port premises.
According to Customs spokesperson Sivali Arukgoda, the shipment contained 713,000 foreign cigarettes valued at over Rs. 120 million. The consignment was smuggled into the country by a company based in Padukka, concealed among goods imported from the United Arab Emirates.
The illegal importation has reportedly caused a revenue loss of over Rs. 100 million to the government.
