A new low-floor priority bus service designed to improve accessibility for persons with disabilities will be launched today at the Makumbura Multimodal Transport Center.
The initiative is implemented under the government’s “Clean Sri Lanka” programme, with an investment of Rs. 430.7 million.
In its first phase, ten modern, air-conditioned low-floor buses will be deployed. These buses are specially designed to ensure easy access for wheelchair users.
Each vehicle can accommodate up to 80 passengers, including 33 seats and designated spaces for wheelchairs. The buses are also fitted with specialised technical features to enhance the safety and stability of wheelchair users during travel.
The service will operate at 40-minute intervals during morning and evening peak hours along the Makumbura–Pettah and Makumbura–Kadawatha routes.
These routes have been strategically planned to improve access to key healthcare institutions, including the Apeksha Hospital and the National Hospital of Sri Lanka.
