Former United National Party (UNP) Deputy Leader and MP Ravi Karunanayake has stressed the importance of maintaining balanced and friendly relations with all major international partners, including the European Union.

Speaking in an interview with Ceylon Wire, Karunanayake said Sri Lanka should maintain a balanced approach in its relations with India, China and the United States while also giving due importance to its ties with the European Union.

He noted that the European Union is particularly important to Sri Lanka in terms of access to international markets and market opportunities.

Karunanayake also called for a strategic approach to balancing relations with the United States, European countries and left-oriented nations.

He stressed the importance of maintaining friendly relations with all countries and highlighted Sri Lanka’s existing ties with Russia, Japan and South Korea.

Karunanayake said Sri Lanka’s foreign policy should be formulated with an understanding that the country is part of the wider international community and cannot operate in isolation.
