Sri Lanka Plans to Ban Sale of Unpackaged Coconut Oil

September 23, 2026

The Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) says it is taking steps to ban the sale of unpackaged coconut oil in the local market.

CAA Acting Director General Samantha Karunasena made the announcement while appearing before a support committee of the Committee on Public Enterprises (COPE) in Parliament.

She said the proposed measure is aimed at addressing concerns over the mixing of inferior-quality coconut oil with products sold in the local market.

According to Karunasena, a Gazette notification has been prepared and is expected to be issued in the future.

Under the proposed regulations, coconut oil packages would be required to display the product name, weight, expiry date, batch number and manufacturer’s details.

She also said the Consumer Affairs Authority is working with the Sri Lanka Standards Institution (SLSI) to ensure that coconut oil available in the local market meets the required quality standards.
