Sri Lanka Police Introduces Speed Guns to Curb High-Speed Driving

In a significant move to reduce road accidents caused by speeding, the Sri Lanka Police have equipped traffic officers with US-made speed guns valued at Rs. 91 million.

The first phase of the initiative saw the Acting Inspector General of Police distributing 30 speed guns to officers in Negombo, Kelaniya, Gampaha, and the Western Provincial Traffic (South) Division. Plans are underway to extend the devices to traffic divisions nationwide, with comprehensive training provided by the Police Traffic Division.

The speed guns, utilizing advanced laser technology, are effective in detecting speeding vehicles during both day and night operations.

In 2024, Sri Lanka recorded 24,589 traffic accidents, including 2,242 fatal incidents resulting in 2,253 deaths. Speeding was a significant contributor, with 31,182 cases of speeding reported and 731 accidents attributed to excessive speed.

This initiative underscores the police’s commitment to enhancing road safety and reducing the tragic consequences of high-speed driving on Sri Lankan roads.
