Sri Lanka Police have warned the public about fraudulent messages circulating on social media and other digital platforms that falsely appear to be official notifications relating to speed limit violations and other traffic offences.
According to Police, complaints were received through the Interchange Unit of the Expressway Division regarding fake messages designed to deceive members of the public.
In response, Sri Lanka Police have issued the following guidelines to help prevent phishing attacks, online scams and other cyber threats:
- Do not click on suspicious links received via SMS, email, messaging apps or forwarded messages from unknown sources.
- Always verify the authenticity of the website address and the identity of the sender before opening or responding to any link.
- Never share personal information, bank account details, One-Time Passwords (OTPs), PINs or passwords through unverified links or unfamiliar websites.
- Confirm the authenticity of such notices only through official Sri Lanka Police communication channels and authorised government websites.
- Report suspicious messages, fraudulent websites and misleading social media posts to the relevant authorities immediately.
- Keep mobile devices, operating systems and applications updated to minimise cybersecurity risks.
- Be especially cautious of messages that create a sense of urgency, threaten legal action or demand immediate payment.
Police stated that following these precautions will significantly reduce the risk of falling victim to cybercrime and help protect personal information and financial security.
They also noted that a public advisory on this issue had been issued previously.
