Lake House Technologies has announced a collaboration with global technology leader Thales to launch Sri Lanka’s first eco-friendly, biodegradable bank card, designed for the Bank of Ceylon and powered by Mastercard International.
The card is made from non-edible, corn-based polylactic acid (PLA), offering a sustainable alternative to traditional PVC plastic cards that take centuries to decompose. Fully industrially compostable, the card represents a milestone in Sri Lanka’s move towards greener financial solutions.
Tony Johnpillai, Executive Director of Lake House Technologies, said the initiative reflects the company’s vision to bring world-class, environmentally responsible innovation to the local banking sector. “By partnering with Bank of Ceylon and global leaders such as Thales and Mastercard, we ensure that we not only meet the evolving demands of the market but also contribute to a sustainable future,” he noted.
With millions of bank cards issued annually, the shift to biodegradable options is expected to significantly reduce waste generation. The new card will be rolled out in phases, giving customers the option to switch from plastic to a greener alternative without compromising security, durability, or global payment functionality.
For over a decade, Lake House Technologies has been a trusted partner of leading banks in Sri Lanka, delivering secure, innovative, and reliable card solutions. The launch of this biodegradable card with Bank of Ceylon marks another historic step in redefining the future of sustainable banking in the country.
