Starlink’s Progress in Sri Lanka: Awaiting Importation of User Equipment

Starlink Lanka (Private) Limited, a subsidiary of Elon Musk’s SpaceX, received a Telecommunications Service Provider License from the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka (TRCSL) on August 12, 2024, authorizing the provision of satellite broadband services across the country.

Despite this licensing milestone, Starlink has not yet initiated the importation of the necessary user terminals and related equipment required for customers to access its satellite internet services. A senior official from TRCSL expressed concerns over this delay, noting that Starlink has been informed of the procedures to apply for equipment importation but has not responded. The official speculated that apprehensions regarding Sri Lanka’s customs regulations might be contributing to the holdup.

The Sri Lankan government has demonstrated support for Starlink’s operations, including amending the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission Act to facilitate the company’s licensing.

While Starlink’s website indicates plans to commence services in Sri Lanka by 2025, pending regulatory approval, the absence of imported user equipment could impact this timeline. Prospective customers are advised to monitor official communications from both Starlink and TRCSL for updates on service availability and equipment procurement procedures.

In the interim, TRCSL remains open to assisting Starlink in navigating the importation process to expedite the availability of satellite broadband services in Sri Lanka.
