The Galaha Police in Kandy have arrested a group of suspects allegedly responsible for breaking into over 21 houses, temples, and jewellery shops across Sri Lanka, stealing valuables worth millions of rupees.
The suspects, aged 19 to 26, are residents of the Jaffna area. Police investigations reveal that this group has been involved in robberies in areas such as Jaffna, Vavuniya, Kayts, Mamandu, Gampola, Galaha, Nuwara Eliya, Kandapola, and Matale over the past four years.
So far, information has surfaced regarding 24 thefts linked to the suspects. Authorities noted that the group would move between areas, rent temporary accommodations, and carry out their thefts.
Additionally, nine pending arrest warrants have been issued against the suspects in the Jaffna jurisdiction. Despite recovering a few gold ornaments from a pawn shop in Jaffna, much of the stolen money has already been spent.
The suspects are scheduled to be presented before the Kandy Magistrate’s Court. Investigations are ongoing.
