Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay has announced plans to establish a world-class Olympic City and a dedicated motorsports city in Chennai as part of a major push to strengthen the state’s sports infrastructure.
Speaking in the state Assembly on Thursday, Vijay said the Tamil Nadu Olympic City would be developed by the Tamil Nadu Sports Development Authority and equipped with international-standard sports arenas, advanced sporting equipment and a High-Performance Training Centre.
The facility will also include dedicated Sports Science and Sports Medicine centres, along with accommodation for athletes and coaches.
According to the Chief Minister, the project is intended to create an integrated sports hub that will provide athletes with advanced training and support, helping Tamil Nadu produce more Olympic medallists and international-level athletes.
He said the infrastructure would also enable Chennai to host major international sporting events.
Vijay further announced plans to establish a dedicated motorsports city in Chennai capable of hosting Formula 1 and other racing events.
The project is expected to identify young motorsport talent and provide them with opportunities for training and competition, with the aim of developing national and international champions.
The Chief Minister said world-class racing facilities could also boost tourism, attract investment in specialized vehicle manufacturing, create employment and contribute to economic development.
The announcements come as India explores the possibility of bringing Formula 1 racing back to the country. In June, the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports reportedly established a task force to monitor motorsports and examine the prospects of returning Formula 1 to India by 2028.
