The Ministry of Tourism has expressed serious concerns regarding the lack of adequate safety measures for tourists visiting Sigiriya, particularly in the event of incidents such as wasp attacks.
During a meeting chaired by Deputy Minister of Tourism, Dr. Ruwan Ranasinghe, key issues affecting both local and foreign visitors were brought to light.
Participants included senior officials from the Tourism Promotion Bureau, Department of Forest Conservation, Urban Development Authority, Dambulla Divisional Secretariat, Central Cultural Fund, and the Department of Archaeology.
Key Issues Highlighted:
- Safety Concerns: Absence of first aid stations and measures to handle emergencies like wasp attacks.
- Infrastructure Gaps: Long ticket counter queues, poor street lighting, and limited access to drinking water.
- Visitor Experience: Unfriendly security personnel, lack of proper regulation of guide services, and insufficient inspections.
- Climbing Assistance: Need for resting places for tourists struggling with the climb.
- Cultural and Aesthetic Enhancements: Plans to improve the Sigiriya Museum, organize thematic and visually engaging instructions and notice boards, and restore ancient water fountains with the support of the Department of Archaeology.
The Ministry has emphasized the urgency of addressing these issues to ensure the safety, comfort, and overall experience of visitors to the historic site.
