Treasury Secretary Summoned Over $2.5M Cyber Theft Probe

April 29, 2026

Treasury Secretary Harshana Suriyapperuma has been summoned before the Committee on Public Finance Sri Lanka (COPF) to provide clarifications regarding the reported US$2.5 million cyber theft.

Committee Chairman Harsha de Silva said the Secretary has been instructed to appear before the committee on Thursday (30), along with senior officials from the Ministry of Finance Sri Lanka.

He noted that the decision to summon the officials was taken unanimously, emphasising the seriousness of the issue.

“We must consider this as a national issue. We cannot resolve this with partisan views. There is clearly a problem, and Parliament has full authority over public finances,” he said.

Dr. de Silva added that the committee is empowered under Standing Orders to call relevant officials and conduct inquiries.

“I strongly urged that the Treasury Secretary be summoned before the committee. After discussion, all members unanimously agreed to this proposal,” he stated.

He further revealed that the Governor of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka has also been summoned, and that committee members will be given the opportunity to question officials during the proceedings.
