US President Donald Trump has announced plans to impose additional tariffs on several European countries, linking the move to what he described as global security concerns involving Greenland.
In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump named the following countries as targets of the new tariffs:
-
Denmark
-
Norway
-
Sweden
-
France
-
Germany
-
United Kingdom
-
Netherlands
-
Finland
Trump stated that a 10% tariff would be imposed on all goods imported from these countries starting 1 February 2026, with the tariff increasing to 25% from 1 June 2026.
He said the tariffs would remain in place “until such time as a deal is reached for the complete and total purchase of Greenland.”
Trump argued that Denmark should “give back” Greenland, claiming that world peace is at stake. He asserted that China and Russia “want Greenland”, and insisted that only the United States is capable of handling the situation.
“This is a very dangerous situation for the safety, security, and survival of our planet,” Trump wrote, accusing the named European nations of placing global security at unacceptable risk.
He said the tariffs were necessary to “protect global peace and security”, and referenced the so-called “Golden Dome” defence system, claiming it could only function optimally if Greenland were included.
There was no immediate response from the governments of the countries named in Trump’s post.
