Former U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday that he would likely impose additional sanctions on Russia if President Vladimir Putin refuses to engage in negotiations to end the ongoing war in Ukraine.
While Trump did not provide specific details about potential new sanctions, he acknowledged that the United States has already imposed extensive economic measures against Russia following its invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
Addressing the issue of military support for Ukraine, Trump also called on the European Union to contribute more significantly to Ukraine’s defense.
“We’re talking to (Ukrainian President Volodymyr) Zelenskiy, we’re going to be talking with President Putin very soon,” Trump said. “We’re going to look at it.”
Trump revealed that he had urged Chinese President Xi Jinping to use his influence to help end the conflict.
“He’s not done very much on that. He’s got a lot of… power, like we have a lot of power. I said, ‘You ought to get it settled.’ We did discuss it,” he stated.
Trump’s remarks reflect his administration’s ongoing focus on seeking resolutions to the conflict, though the specifics of his proposed actions remain unclear.
