Uber Launches ‘Uber for Teens’ in Sri Lanka

Safer, independent rides for teenagers with real-time parental oversight

Uber, Sri Lanka’s most popular ride-hailing platform, has officially launched ‘Uber for Teens’, a new product designed for teenagers aged 13 to 17, offering them the freedom to ride independently while keeping parents informed every step of the way.

This marks the first time in Sri Lanka that families can access a teen-specific ride option with robust safety features, combining convenience for young riders with peace of mind for parents.

“With Uber for Teens, we’re introducing a powerful solution for busy families in Sri Lanka — one that blends independence for teens with transparency and peace of mind for parents,” said Kaushalya Gunaratne, Country Manager – Mobility, Uber Sri Lanka. “We’re proud to bring one of our most trusted global features to the market, reinforcing our commitment to safe, inclusive, and innovative mobility.”

Key Safety Features:

Uber for Teens includes advanced, tech-enabled safety protocols:

  • Real-time trip tracking: Guardians receive live notifications when a ride is requested, with full visibility throughout the journey.

  • PIN verification: Teen riders must input a unique PIN to confirm they are entering the correct vehicle.

  • RideCheck: Uber’s technology detects unexpected stops or route deviations and prompts both rider and driver to ensure everything is okay.

  • Verified driver-partners: Only experienced, top-rated drivers can accept teen ride requests. Drivers are notified that the trip involves a teen and may opt out if preferred.

How It Works:

  • Parents or guardians with verified Uber accounts can invite their teens to join.

  • Teens set up their own specialized account, listing their guardian(s).

  • Once set up, teens can book rides independently, while guardians receive notifications, real-time tracking, and trip summaries.

  • Guardians can also book rides on behalf of their teens, which appear under the teen’s account.

Currently available in Sri Lanka’s Western Province, Uber for Teens allows access to various ride options, including Uber Zip, Premier, Reserve, and Tuk, with expansion to other cities expected soon.
