The United National Party (UNP) Working Committee has approved initiating discussions with the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) on a possible alliance for the upcoming elections.
The UNP Working Committee met earlier today (20) at the party headquarters to deliberate on the matter. Following this, the General Secretary of the SJB, Ranjith Madduma Bandara, confirmed that the first round of discussions between the two parties is scheduled to take place in Colombo tonight.
Former Parliamentarian Rajitha Senaratne disclosed that the UNP has appointed two representatives to attend the meeting.
The SJB Working Committee had recently approved a proposal to explore unification with the UNP for the elections, signaling openness to collaboration.
Meanwhile, the SJB parliamentary group held a special meeting this afternoon at the Opposition Leader’s office in Colombo to strategize and review these developments.
The discussions between the UNP and SJB mark a significant step toward potential cooperation in the political landscape, with both parties eyeing strengthened prospects in the forthcoming elections.
