Western Province Faces Acute Teacher Shortage, Initiates Recruitment Measures

The Western Provincial Council has reported a shortage of over 4,000 teachers, particularly in the subjects of English, Tamil, and Information Technology, as well as for English-medium instruction.

Chief Secretary Dhammika Wijesinghe outlined steps being taken to address the issue, including the recruitment of graduates with Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) degrees from the University of Peradeniya and the University of Colombo.

Additionally, development officers currently working in schools may be transitioned into teaching roles based on their qualifications.

In a significant move to alleviate the shortage, more than 3,900 graduates who successfully passed recent competitive exams have already been recruited into the teaching service in the Western Province.

These initiatives aim to enhance the quality of education and ensure adequate staffing in key subject areas.
