United National Party (UNP) Deputy Leader and Member of Parliament Ravi Karunanayake questioned the taxation of university academics and medical professionals while Members of Parliament receive tax concessions.
Speaking in Parliament, Karunanayake said university academics, who play an important role in shaping the country’s future, are subject to high levels of taxation. He added that doctors have also raised concerns about the tax burden they face.
Against this backdrop, he questioned why Members of Parliament should receive tax relief while other citizens are required to pay taxes, stating that any concessions granted to MPs should also be available to the general public.
Karunanayake also criticized the government’s taxation policies, claiming that taxes are being imposed on a wide range of activities while subsidies are being provided to foreign companies. He argued that greater relief should instead be directed towards people facing economic difficulties.
He also raised concerns about the fuel market, questioning why foreign companies are receiving subsidies while the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation is facing competition from several international companies. He called for greater clarity on the government’s plans regarding the use of substandard coal.
The MP further questioned whether the previously promised 35% reduction in electricity tariffs had been achieved, noting that two years had passed since the commitment was made.
He also claimed that local renewable energy entrepreneurs are being placed under pressure due to what he described as the influence of the “diesel mafia.”
