World Mother’s Day Celebrated Today in Sri Lanka and Around the Globe

World Mother’s Day is being observed today in Sri Lanka and in many countries across the world. The occasion is celebrated annually on the second Sunday of May to honor mothers and their enduring contributions to families and society.

The modern observance of Mother’s Day originated in early 20th-century America, led by social activist Anna Jarvis. In 1908, she held the first official celebration in West Virginia to commemorate her late mother and to recognize the sacrifices mothers make for their children.

Inspired by her campaign, U.S. President Woodrow Wilson formally declared the second Sunday of May as Mother’s Day in 1914, establishing a tradition that continues globally to this day.
