Sri Lanka Air Force Set to Reintroduce Upgraded Kfir Fighter Jets

The Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) is preparing to enhance its operational capabilities with the addition of an overhauled and upgraded Kfir multirole combat aircraft to its fleet in early 2025. This development is part of a $50 million agreement signed with Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) in 2021 to modernize SLAF’s fleet of Kfir fighter jets.

Under the program, five Kfir aircraft from SLAF’s No. 10 Squadron are being upgraded to a 4.5-generation standard. The modernization includes advanced avionics, modern radar systems, sensors, communication upgrades, and enhanced helmets to improve combat efficiency.

While key components such as engines are being sent to Israel for upgrades, most of the overhaul work is being conducted locally at SLAF’s Katunayake facility, with Israeli experts providing support. This approach not only enhances the fleet but also facilitates knowledge and skill transfer to SLAF personnel.

The upgraded fleet will come with a 15-year guarantee from IAI, a company renowned for its expertise in modernizing military aircraft for clients including the Israel Air Force and the US Air Force.

Addressing the need to maintain fighter jets like Kfir and F7 in SLAF’s fleet, Air Force Commander Air Marshal Udeni Rajapaksa emphasized their strategic importance. “While we don’t see an immediate need to phase out such jets, we must prioritize certain things depending on the country’s economy. Our focus remains on peace in the Indian Ocean region,” he stated.

In addition to the Kfir upgrades, SLAF has expanded its fleet by acquiring two Chinese-made Y12 aircraft, reflecting its broader commitment to strengthening national defense capabilities.
