Ravi Karunanayake: 2025 Budget Lacks Creativity, Merely Extends Existing Policies

Former UNP National Secretary and Member of Parliament Ravi Karunanayake criticized the government’s 2025 budget, stating that it contains no new or creative proposals.

Speaking at a special media briefing on the budget, Karunanayake remarked that the proposals are merely a continuation of the open economic policies introduced during the tenure of former President J. R. Jayewardene.

He further stated:

“We cannot call this budget creative because it follows the same policies we have already implemented. In my view, this is simply an extension of our previous policies. However, given the current situation, maintaining economic stability without drastic changes is a positive approach.”

“Continuing the open economy initiated by President Jayewardene’s government is beneficial. At a time when the country is recovering from an economic crisis, avoiding sudden policy shifts is a prudent decision.”

“Right now, our focus should be on ensuring long-term economic stability. In doing so, we must prioritize the nation’s progress over political divisions—whether we are blue, green, or red.”
