Ravi Karunanayake Calls for New Constitution and Local Government Reforms

Former Deputy Leader of the United National Party (UNP), MP Ravi Karunanayake, has proposed the introduction of a new constitution, emphasizing the need for structural reforms in local governance.

Addressing the media, Karunanayake stated that the current number of local government members—over 8,900—should be significantly reduced to ensure more effective administration.

He noted that governance should take precedence over maintaining an overly large system and stressed that local development must originate from within the village itself.

“In order to steer the country towards real progress, it is essential to implement meaningful constitutional reforms,” he said, adding that a new constitution is vital for Sri Lanka’s path forward.
