A number of Sri Lankan nationals currently in Israel for business purposes have been left stranded due to the ongoing closure of Israeli airspace and the suspension of international flights, the Sri Lankan Embassy in Israel has confirmed.
Ben Gurion International Airport, Israel’s main international gateway, remains closed following escalating tensions and conflict with Iran. With no commercial flights operating, outbound travel options are severely restricted.
Sri Lanka’s Ambassador to Israel, Nimal Bandara, stated that the Embassy is closely monitoring the situation and making every effort to ensure the safety of Sri Lankans in the country. Assistance is also being provided for those who wish to leave Israel, he said.
Given the current limitations, Ambassador Bandara advised that one possible option for departure is via the Eilat border crossing into Egypt, pending coordination and clearance.
The Ambassador also noted that Sri Lankans residing in older buildings, especially those without proper shelters, have raised concerns over their safety. In response, they have been encouraged to consult with family members and designated social workers to establish personal emergency plans, including identifying temporary shelter options during attacks.
All Sri Lankan nationals in Israel have been urged to remain vigilant, adhere to official safety instructions, and contact the Embassy immediately in case of emergencies.
