Sri Lanka Achieves 70% Renewable Energy Generation in June 2025 – CEB

The Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) announced that Sri Lanka achieved 70% electricity generation from renewable energy sources in June 2025, marking a significant milestone in the country’s clean energy journey.

In a statement, the CEB highlighted that this is the highest renewable energy contribution since the early 1990s, when Sri Lanka relied almost entirely on hydropower. The board noted that this achievement comes despite June recording higher electricity demand compared to other months.

“This milestone reflects the CEB’s consistent efforts to restore renewable energy dominance in the national grid,” the statement read. It also pointed out the country’s transition over the past decades—from an almost 100% hydropower-based system to a mixed hydro-thermal model—and now, a renewed focus on sustainable energy sources.

The CEB added that this progress underscores the effectiveness of recent investments and policies aimed at expanding solar, wind, and other renewable energy capacities.
