The Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL) has launched the ‘Anti-Pyramid National Awareness Week’, beginning today (July 14) and continuing until July 18. Spearheaded by the CBSL’s Financial Consumer Relations Department, the campaign will be conducted under the theme: “Pyramid is a trap – don’t get into the wrong track.”
The initiative aims to raise nationwide awareness of prohibited pyramid schemes and the serious risks they pose to individuals and the broader economy. The CBSL emphasized that the campaign will engage a wide cross-section of the population, including school students and teachers, members of the Tri-Forces, Civil Security Department personnel, Sri Lanka Police, public sector employees, and the general public.
To ensure island-wide grassroots coverage, the campaign will reach out through 6,172 schools and 14,022 Grama Niladhari (GN) divisions, engaging local communities and promoting financial literacy.
Throughout the awareness week, participants will receive education on:
-
Legal provisions related to banned pyramid schemes
-
The deceptive structure and marketing tactics of such schemes
-
The financial consequences and risks associated with participation
-
First-hand accounts from victims who have suffered losses
A multi-platform media strategy will support the campaign, incorporating newspaper ads, social media campaigns, educational posters, live-streams, television and radio programs, news taglines, and public seminars held across the country.
The CBSL urges all citizens to participate actively and remain vigilant. According to the Central Bank, awareness and caution are essential to preventing financial fraud and maintaining public trust in the financial system.
