Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced on Saturday that he will travel to Washington, D.C., on Monday for talks with U.S. President Donald Trump focused on “ending the killing and the war.”
The announcement came after a phone call between the two leaders, during which Trump briefed Zelensky on the “main points” of his recent discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska.
“On Monday, I will meet with President Trump in Washington, D.C., to discuss all of the details regarding ending the killing and the war. I am grateful for the invitation,” Zelensky said.
He added that the call with Trump was “long and substantive,” beginning as a one-on-one exchange before being joined by European leaders.
The Washington talks are scheduled just three days after Trump’s summit with Putin in Alaska, which concluded without a ceasefire announcement or any apparent breakthrough to halt Moscow’s more than three-year-long invasion of Ukraine.
Following that summit, Zelensky urged Kyiv’s European allies to be included at “every stage” of the negotiations. He also reiterated Ukraine’s readiness to take part in a trilateral meeting with Trump and Putin — a format Kyiv has long sought, though one the Kremlin continues to resist.
“Ukraine emphasises that key issues can be discussed at the level of leaders, and a trilateral format is suitable for this,” Zelensky said.
