The Colombo Port City Economic Commission has suspended the issuance of visa recommendations to two of its authorized institutions following the detention and deportation of several foreign nationals.
In a statement, the Commission said the suspension will remain in effect until the completion of an investigation into an incident at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA).
The Commission has formally requested the institutions concerned to submit detailed written explanations and supporting documents to ensure transparency in the probe. It also expressed gratitude to the Department of Immigration and Emigration for its vigilance.
Reiterating its mandate under Section 74 of the Colombo Port City Economic Commission Act No. 11 of 2021, the Commission emphasized that the powers of all regulatory authorities in Sri Lanka are suspended within the Colombo Port City Special Economic Zone.
The Commission further urged all authorized institutions to carry out comprehensive checks, including full background verifications, prior to recruitment in order to maintain high standards.
While reaffirming its commitment to fostering a business-friendly environment, the Commission stressed that it will continue to support legitimate business activities within the Special Economic Zone, while safeguarding national interests and ensuring the role of the Colombo Port City as a strategic national asset.
