A decline in air quality has been observed over the past few days, with Air Quality Index (AQI) levels increasing, particularly in the Northern, North Central, North Western and Western Provinces, according to Central Environmental Authority (CEA) Media Spokesman Dr. Ajith Gunawardena.
Dr. Gunawardena said a noticeable deterioration in air quality was recorded yesterday and today, with AQI levels currently ranging between 150 and 200.
He explained that the situation is mainly due to transboundary air movement combined with the activation of the Northeast Monsoon.
The CEA spokesman noted that similar conditions have been observed during this period in previous years and emphasized that the Central Environmental Authority continues to closely monitor air quality and atmospheric conditions across the country.
He also warned that the decline in air quality may cause health effects, particularly among air-quality–sensitive individuals, and advised such persons to seek medical attention if necessary.
However, Dr. Gunawardena told the media that the air quality situation is expected to improve after today.
