Public health experts are urging the public to exercise caution when using water sources during the festive season, warning that recent disasters have altered the safety of many natural water bodies across the country.
Speaking at a media briefing organized by the Health Promotion Bureau, Community Medicine Specialist Dr. Samitha Siritunga noted that floods and other disaster-related impacts have changed water levels, depths, and conditions in rivers, streams, and bathing areas.
“Even places that people used in the past may have changed significantly. What was once shallow can now be deep and dangerous,” he said, advising the public to seek local guidance before bathing or using unfamiliar water sources.
Dr. Siritunga also highlighted the increased risk of road accidents during school holidays and festive periods, urging motorists, passengers, and pedestrians to remain vigilant. Citing data from previous years, he noted that traffic accidents often rise during holidays due to driver behavior, vehicle conditions, and heavier pedestrian traffic.
He further advised vehicle owners to thoroughly check their vehicles for roadworthiness before traveling, emphasizing that proper vehicle maintenance and responsible driving can help minimize accidents during the busy holiday season.
