Former UNP Deputy Leader and Parliamentarian Ravi Karunanayake said that the UNP-led government elected in 2015 made the right decision by introducing a national insurance system, which allowed the country to effectively manage the 2016 flood crisis.
He explained that the insurance programme was implemented through state machinery, enabling Divisional Secretariat Divisions to provide full compensation for the assets and properties of people affected by the disaster.
Ravi Karunanayake highlighted that residents of Kolonnawa, who were severely impacted by the 2016 floods, received substantial relief through this system. He added that approximately 90 percent of affected individuals were compensated with amounts equivalent to the value of the property or assets they had lost.
