The Sri Lanka Police have reported an increase in complaints about financial frauds committed through social media platforms such as Telegram, WhatsApp, and other online communication networks.
Fraudsters typically lure victims with fake offers, job opportunities, or unusually low prices, tricking them into revealing bank details, usernames, or making advance payments. Once the money or information is obtained, the fraudsters block the victims.
Police emphasize that money transfers or sharing personal information should only be done after verifying authenticity. They urge the public to use secure payment methods and remain vigilant against online scams.
Common Tactics Used by Fraudsters:
-
Offering products at prices much lower than market value to exploit consumer greed.
-
Creating a sense of urgency by claiming limited availability or “buy now” conditions.
-
Requesting advance payments, often Rs. 5,000, Rs. 10,000, or Rs. 20,000, to ‘reserve’ an item. Once the money is deposited, they disconnect or block the victim’s contact.
Police Advice to Avoid Scams:
-
Never pay for a product before receiving it in hand.
-
Avoid making advance deposits for online items.
-
Prefer cash on delivery or face-to-face transactions.
-
Be cautious when meeting strangers; choose crowded, safe places and avoid going alone.
-
Verify the seller’s authenticity by requesting a video call showing both the product and the seller’s face, as fraudsters often avoid showing themselves.
-
Check bank account details carefully; do not deposit money if there are doubts about the account number or name, as many fraudsters use accounts created with stolen IDs.
The Police advise the public to remain alert and take all necessary precautions when engaging in online transactions.
